Washington – British Columbia Chapter builds momentum with successful AGM
The recently renamed Washington – British Columbia Chapter (formerly the North Pacific International Chapter) put on a successful AGM in Shelton WA, April 21-23, chaired by President-Elect Jim Shannon. The timely theme “New Science for Managing Uncertainties in Fisheries” attracted a diversity of sessions and symposia including how hyrdoacoustic telemetry and remote sensing tools are used in management, the effects of toxic compounds and climate change on fish, management of a variety of species and their habitats, genetic stock identification, and a look into the mysterious world of Puget Sound’s shark populations.
Several awards were presented at the meeting including the Haig Brown Award which was presented to Wild Fish Conservancy Northwest in recognition of the excellence of their publications Wild Fish Journal and Wild Fish Runs e-newsletter. Dr. Peter Bergman received the Worthy Coelacanth Award for his outstanding contributions to fish science and management in the Pacific Northwest. Todd Kassler, The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, Keith Wolfe and KWA Ecological Sciences, Inc., Hal Michael, Seattle Public Utilities, Julie Henning, and Eric Knudsen were also honored. Students figured prominently at this meeting and the Best Student Paper was awarded to Ryan Simmons while the second place prize was given to Gordon Holtgrieve, both studying at the University of Washington. Katie Wagner, from Eastern Washington University won the Best Student Poster award. One of AFS’s more unique awards, The Fish Gaffe, which recognizes the year’s most noteworthy faux pas by a Chapter member was awarded to chapter President Larry Dominguez for his typsos in evry emale and his unique stream of consciosnus.
