Bellingham Turns the Tide

The City of Bellingham and Port of Bellingham have joined forces to create a master plan to guide the redevelopment of Bellingham’s downtown waterfront. In 2005, the Port of Bellingham acquired a 137 acre parcel of a former pulp mill on Bellingham’s waterfront and now with other properties, redevelopment planning for 220 acres is underway. The Whatcom Waterway, a federal deepwater harbor in the project area will be renovated to allow for a mix of recreational, institutional, and industrial use. Bulk heads and fixed piers will be removed and the shoreline softened to enhance nearshore and estuarine habitat. A water treatment pond will also be converted to aquatic habitat and marina. The uplands will be developed as a new city neighborhood with homes, shops, offices and light industry, as well as parks and promenades. Port staff will provide an overview of the Project and a tour of the property and shoreline of Whatcom Waterway. At 12:45 we will meet at 921 Cornwall Avenue for a box lunch and overview of the project. The walking tour will follow. Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided; bring your own if you wish.
